Shiloh Academy Wellness Policy

At Shiloh Academy and Shiloh House, we believe that true success comes from supporting the whole child — academically, emotionally, and physically. This wellness policy is designed to ensure that every young person in our programs has access to nutritious food, physical activity, healthy daily routines, and an environment that encourages overall well-being.

Nutrition & Food Services

  • Free, Healthy Meals: All students receive free lunches that meet or exceed USDA nutrition standards. Meals are balanced and include a protein (meat or meat alternative), a fruit or vegetable, a grain, and a beverage, usually milk.

  • Special Accommodations: Adjustments are made for students with medical conditions, allergies, or religious dietary practices.

  • Nutritious Snacks: After-school programs provide snacks that follow USDA guidelines, with a focus on fruits and other nutrient-rich options.

  • Professional Oversight: Menus are created and approved by a licensed nutritionist and kept on file with the Food Service Department.

  • Celebrations & Inclusion: Dessert items are limited to special occasions like birthdays or graduations, and inclusive alternatives are always available to meet every student’s dietary needs.

  • No Unhealthy Food Sales: There are no vending machines or food sales on campus, and food is never used as a reward or consequence, ensuring a healthy relationship with eating.

Physical Activity & Recreation

  • Daily Exercise: Shiloh Academy students participate in physical education classes, while youth in residential programs enjoy structured recreational activities with therapeutic goals.

  • Wellness through Culture: Activities often highlight the connection between food, culture, and community, helping students learn how healthy choices play a role in everyday life.

  • Hands-On Learning: Recreational and cultural activities encourage teamwork, skill-building, and the discovery of personal strengths.

Health & Daily Wellness Habits

  • Healthy Routines: Programs emphasize hand washing, proper hydration, and healthy sleep schedules. Residential youth are supported with early bedtimes to ensure a minimum of nine hours of rest each night.

  • Illness & Safety Policies: Clear guidelines are in place for staff and students if illness occurs. In addition, Shiloh House maintains an Emergency Preparedness Plan that details how the agency responds to epidemic or pandemic situations.

  • Staff Modeling: Staff members are encouraged to practice and model the same wellness habits they promote for youth.

Food Items Not Prepared On-Site

  • Consistency in Nutrition: To promote good mental and behavioral health, Shiloh Academy does not sell outside food or snacks on school grounds.

  • Allergen Awareness: If outside food is brought in for celebrations, staff collect ingredient information to ensure student safety.

  • Balanced Portions: When outside food is provided as part of a meal, portion sizes follow USDA recommendations.

Family & Community Involvement

  • Parent Partnerships: During intake, families share cultural, medical, and dietary information so we can provide care that respects each student’s needs.

  • Ongoing Communication: Parents and guardians are involved through family therapy, IEP meetings, teacher communication, and multidisciplinary team meetings.

  • Gathering Feedback: Shiloh House values input from students, parents, and community partners. Feedback is collected through surveys, meetings, and direct conversations.

Policy Oversight & Continuous Improvement

  • Annual Review: All wellness policies are updated yearly through collaboration between Shiloh House leadership and reviewed by chief officers.

  • Board Oversight: Strategic plans and policies are also reviewed and approved by the governing board.

  • Transparency: Updates are shared with families and community stakeholders through mailings, email, and social media.

  • Evaluation: Multiple committees — including Accreditation, Trauma-Informed Care, Training, and Risk Management — regularly review wellness policies. Staff or community members may suggest updates at any time by contacting licensing@shilohhouse.net
